POSITION TITLE: Campaign Canvasser
DEPARTMENT: Public Affairs
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director Public Affairs
LOCATION: Hybrid Work from home with some in-person meetings
HOURS/STATUS: Part-time
FLSA STATUS: Temporary ending November 2024

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Director of Public Affairs, campaign canvassers provide assistance to and support Education Minnesota’s local and state campaign efforts.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Using a provided script of discussion topics and questions, engage members and other union members in conversations on the phone.
  • Record data obtained from the conversations using mobile miniVAN software application.
  • Listen to and document the concerns of members and other union members.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Appreciation for the importance of labor unions in improving public education and working conditions overall.
  • Good public relations, communications, telephone and personal skills.
  • Ability to engage members and other union members in conversation upon first interaction.
  • Ability to enter data into a computer, or mobile device.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Retired Education Minnesota member
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Basic understanding of web or app-based computer software.
  • Valid Minnesota driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of and commitment to the cause of employee unions.
  • General knowledge of politics or experience working or volunteering on political campaigns.
  • Dedication, persistence, and an ability to bounce back from difficult conversations.
  • Ability to follow complex, multi-step directions.
  • Experience with miniVAN.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is in a general office environment. Employee is required to: talk and hear; have clear vision with or without corrective lenses, frequently stand, walk and repetitively use hands dexterously (use fingers to handle, feel), reach with hands and arms, bend and physically lift and carry up to 10 pounds; occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and infrequently travel by various conveyances (e.g., air, rail, auto). 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Evenings and weekends work.
  • Maintain confidential information as applicable.
  • Able to successfully pass a post offer pre-employment background check.
