SAINT PAUL, Minnesota. March 15, 2023 – Representatives of six of the largest metro unions of educators in Minnesota will call on the Legislature to fully fund E-12 education during a news conference at 10 a.m. Friday in the Capitol press room.
Unions of educators across Minnesota are filing the paperwork this month to start negotiations on the two-year contracts between educators and their districts that set many of the conditions for effective teaching and learning in Minnesota’s schools. The six locals appearing on Friday intend to file that day with the state Bureau of Mediation Services, which is standard practice.
The state’s financial contribution to district budgets is a key piece of every union’s negotiations with school districts.
Scheduled to attend are union leaders and educators from:
- Anoka Hennepin Education Minnesota
- Dakota County United Educators (representing educators in Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan schools)
- Education Minnesota – Osseo
- Minneapolis Federation of Teachers
- Robbinsdale Federation of Teachers and Education Support Professionals
- Saint Paul Federation of Educators
The educators in the six local unions educate approximately 167,000 Minnesota students, or about one of every five students in the state. The speakers will describe concerns and needs that are specific to metro districts and funding challenges that are widely shared by schools across the state.
