ST. PAUL, Minn., Aug. 27, 2025 – Education Minnesota extends its deepest sympathies to the educators and families affected by the latest act of mass gun violence in Minnesota, this time at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning.
“We are heartbroken and horrified by news of today’s mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis,” said Monica Byron, president of Education Minnesota. “Back-to-school should be a time of joy, not fear and sorrow. Our hearts are with the educators, students and families impacted by this latest act of senseless gun violence. Enough!”
Preliminary reports from the Minneapolis Police Department said the shooter was armed with a rifle, shotgun and pistol and opened fire from outside the building on dozens of students praying at morning Mass during the first week of school. Two young students were killed, and 17 other people were injured, including 14 children. The shooter died at the scene of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the MPD.
Education Minnesota stands in solidarity with all educators who risk their lives and health to teach and nurture the students of Minnesota, although the union does not represent the teachers or staff at Annunciation school.
