Where and what do you teach?
High School English Language Arts – currently on full-time release serving as president of WBLAE.
What issue are you most looking forward to working on as a Governing Board member?
Full funding of public education. So much of what makes our work feel unsustainable at times directly connects to the fact that our schools are underfunded. As a result, students and teachers don’t have what they need to thrive.
What is your favorite thing about being an educator?
The joy of learning.
Outside of the classroom, what’s something you like to do?
I love to spend time working in my garden.
How have you worked in union to overcome a professional challenge?
Our local is fortunate to share a deep commitment to labor-management collaboration with our school district. This has opened the door to many interest-based conversations that extend beyond mandatory subjects of bargaining. This collaboration often allows us to address issues before they become much larger problems. We continue to develop the work of our Professional Council – a representative group of members that meets with administrative reps quarterly to address concerns and problem solve. WBLAE building reps meet frequently with site-level administrators to a similar end – pro-actively addressing concerns so that we can all get back to our primary focus: serving students.
