ST. PAUL, Minnesota. Jan. 8, 2026 – Education Minnesota President Monica Byron and local union leaders from across the state will hold a news conference Friday morning to call on Immigration and Customs Enforcement to stay away from schools.
Byron released a statement earlier today calling for ICE to stay away from schools.
Speakers will share firsthand accounts of how recent ICE actions are affecting students, families and educators in their communities—including students missing class because they and their families are afraid to leave their homes, disruptions to learning and the emotional toll on children who no longer feel safe at school.
Educators will emphasize that schools must remain places of safety, stability and learning for all students, and will urge federal officials to ensure ICE operations do not interfere with education or put students, families and school staff at risk.
