ST. PAUL, Minnesota. Jan. 7, 2026 – Education Minnesota President Monica Byron released the following statement in response to today’s shooting death of a woman in Minneapolis by an ICE agent.
“We are sickened to hear the news that an ICE agent shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis today. From reckless shootings to terrifying our students through unnecessary raids at elementary schools, one thing is clear: ICE does not make our communities safer. Our hearts go out to the victim, her family and all of the Minnesota families suffering due to ICE’s disgraceful actions.
Since their arrival, ICE has been operating a campaign of fear based on targeting Minnesota’s children and families. This cannot be allowed to continue. We are joining the call to demand a transparent investigation into this shooting and that ICE withdraw from Minnesota immediately. As Minnesota educators, our purpose is to help the next generation learn and grow in safe, supportive environments. ICE’s presence in Minnesota undermines these efforts and must end before any further harm is done.”
