House budget targets move Minnesota in the right direction but fall short of fully funding public education

ST. PAUL, Minnesota. March 23, 2021 – The Minnesota House of Representatives presented budget targets Tuesday that includes significant new investments in E-12 and higher education. In response, Education Minnesota President Denise Specht released the following statement:

“The budget targets released by the Minnesota House are much better than the Senate targets but fall short of our goal for fully funding public education. However, the House targets are a move in the right direction when combined with asking the wealthiest Minnesotans and largest corporations to finally pay their fair share. Our union looks forward to sharing stories from Minnesota’s classroom about the specific needs of our students and why it is so important to create sustainable revenue streams to pay for smaller class sizes, more vocational education, broadband, access to mental health professionals, and creating more safe, welcoming and effective schools for all students, no matter what they look like or where they live.”
