POSITION SUMMARY:

Education Minnesota envisions increased visible representation of teachers who mirror Minnesota’s diverse learners and communities who are highly qualified and reflective, classroom-ready educators that can prepare and deliver effective education programs and inclusionary educational opportunities for all students. Under the direction of the Policy and Program Director, the Apprenticeship Navigator for Teacher Apprenticeship Minnesota will work directly with apprentices at signatory employer districts and play a critical role in supporting, evaluating and strengthening the apprenticeship experience. The Apprenticeship Navigator will lead collaborative teams of course faculty, mentors, field supervisors and coaches to provide high-quality support to apprentices as they work toward becoming journeyworker educators. The Apprenticeship Navigator will demonstrate a commitment to creating an inclusive space for members and staff, extending this culture of equity and inclusion into the work.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for apprentices at signatory employer districts, spending time on-site providing direct support and coaching.
  • Build strong relationships with apprentices, mentors, field supervisors and district partners to foster a supportive learning environment.
  • Coordinate and lead teams of course faculty, mentors, field supervisors and instructional coaches to ensure consistent, high-quality support for apprentices.
  • Support the design, delivery and refinement of coursework and related program content aligned with licensure and apprenticeship requirements.
  • Monitor apprentice progress and collaborate with staff to implement systems of feedback, evaluation and continuous improvement.
  • Provide classroom support for apprentice during collaboration time with journeyworker teacher.
  • Collaborate with state and national partners, including unions, licensure bodies and apprenticeship agencies, to promote and grow the program.
  • Participate in and contribute to research, data collection and reporting related to program implementation and outcomes.
  • Represent Teacher Apprenticeship Minnesota in external meetings, conferences and working groups.
  • Stay current on relevant licensure policies, apprenticeship standards and teacher preparation trends.
  • Support alignment between the apprenticeship program and the broader mission and goals of Education Minnesota.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience as a teacher preparation student and P-12 teaching experience, in special education and/or general education with demonstrated experience and expertise with inclusionary practices.
  • Ability to successfully work with, learn from, communicate with and support diverse individuals and groups which includes establishing an equity and inclusionary lens; history of success working with communities of color or with other historically under-represented groups.
  • Strong background knowledge in the importance of labor unions in improving public education.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively handle multiple, complex assignments and lead amidst changing priorities.
  • Knowledge of and background in anti-racist or cultural competence curricula or tools such as Intercultural Development Index, Beyond Diversity, Center for Culturally Responsive Teaching, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.A. in education or related field or a combination of two of the following: 10 years’ experience working in a school setting; demonstrated course work and expertise in adult learning
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends
  • Valid Minnesota driver’s license

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree or higher in teaching, education, special education or another relevant field.
  • Experience with registered apprenticeships or alternative teacher preparation programs.
  • Background and training in instructional coaching or educator preparation program design.
  • Familiarity with Minnesota licensure requirements and state education agencies.
  • Understanding of union values, public education systems and educator advocacy.
  • Experience designing or facilitating professional development or coursework.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some travel with overnight stays.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Works in a general office environment. This position will interact with employees, vendors, members and the general public on a somewhat regular basis. These interactions require judgment and discretion that can involve confidential information, private information and some disagreeable human interactions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Employee is required to: Continuously sit, talk and hear; frequently stand, walk and repetitively use hands dexterously (use fingers to handle, feel), reach with hands and arms, bend and physically lift and carry up to 25 pounds; occasionally lift up to 50 pounds and semifrequent travel (up to 30% of time) by various conveyances (e.g., air, rail, auto).

STARTING SALARY RANGE:

First three steps of the salary schedule, in accordance with the current staff collective bargaining agreement: $104,087-$112,909 annual; placement depends on qualifications and previous experience.
