ST. PAUL, Minnesota., Oct. 18, 2023 – Thousands of educators from across Minnesota will attend the annual MEA conference on Thursday, where they will hear from various speakers and choose from dozens of classes intended to help them meet the needs of their students. The Minnesota Educator Academy conference is an annual tradition since 1861.

“This is the premier event for professional development for educators and we’re proud to offer such high-quality, practical training for educators and aspiring educators each year,” said Education Minnesota Vice President Monica Byron. “We’re providing classes for educators – often by educators – that will improve the quality of the teaching and care our students receive for the rest of the school year.”

The opening session will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday. The keynote speaker will be Brittany Wagner, an academic counselor featured on the Netflix documentary series Last Chance U. Wagner has helped more than 200 football players academically qualify for nationally respected NCAA Division I schools, and all of the students Wagner advised who are currently playing in the NFL also hold college degrees. Wagner is also the author of Next Chance You, a motivational guide to personal success.

MEA will offer more than 50 workshops and 90 exhibits focusing on student and educator mental health, classroom management, racial equity and social justice, relicensure courses, evidence-based literacy and much more. The conference is only open to Education Minnesota members and those studying to become educators.

Education Minnesota asks journalists to contact communications specialist Lindy Sowmick in advance to arrange on-site interviews. Sowmick can also arrange limited access to in-person sessions on Thursday.
