ST. PAUL, Minnesota. Dec. 6, 2022 – A state administrative law judge has approved most of a set of proposed rules for teacher preparation programs intended to foster a greater understanding of how personal biases can shape education practices.
Education Minnesota supports the proposed changes to standards for teacher preparation programs from the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board, or PELSB. Administrative Law Judge Jim Mortenson reviewed the proposed changes as part of the standard rulemaking process. His ruling was released Tuesday.
“In Minnesota, we want our students to have the freedom to be themselves and pursue their dreams — no matter their race, how they pray, where they’re from or whether they are transgender or not,” said Denise Specht, president of Education Minnesota. “We welcome these changes so Minnesota’s new teachers receive the training they need to ensure every student can learn from a great educator in a safe, welcoming and effective public school.”
In commenting specifically about the ruling, Specht said: “We applaud the administrative law judge for approving the vast majority of the proposed rules as necessary and reasonable.”
