Congratulations on choosing a career in education!

Education Minnesota Aspiring Educators is a pre-professional organization for college and university students like you who plan to be teachers.

  • $1 million in professional liability insurance while you’re in the classroom. This coverage is important when you’re involved in clinical classroom experiences or student teaching. Many colleges and universities as well as school districts require professional liability insurance coverage. If you student teach in another state or country, your insurance covers you as long as you are enrolled in a Minnesota college or university.
  • Connection with state and national affiliate organizations. Their publications cover professional issues including licensure, graduation standards, peer review and teaching techniques as well as organizational information.
  • Network with other pre-professionals.
  • Expand your leadership skills at the campus level. Education Minnesota works with campus leaders to develop effective chapters.
  • Save money on car, home, health and life insurance; credit cards; entertainment; travel; loans, and more through state and national programs.

Education Minnesota provides the following workshops for aspiring educator members:

Campus membership drive. We explain what Education Minnesota is all about and the benefits (insurance, financial, educational) of membership in Education Minnesota Aspiring Educators. Chapter organizations frequently cosponsor the program. We often provide door prizes or food for the meeting.

Code of Ethics information sessions. We discuss the Code of Ethics for Teachers, and how it applies to students in education programs and to teachers when they become licensed and employed. We share anecdotes to make the code more real to students.

Fall Student Leadership Workshop. We invite chapter leaders to a weekend retreat to meet other campus leaders, learn leadership skills and plan ways to make their campus organizations effective.

Education Minnesota Professional Conference. We offer free workshops specifically geared to the needs of student teachers and new teachers.

Spring Student Leadership Workshops. Newly elected leaders and their advisors meet with other state chapter leaders. We discuss Education Minnesota Aspiring Educators, network with one another and start planning for the following year’s program.

National conferences. Education Minnesota’s national affiliates provide funding for student leaders to attend the National Education Association’s annual Student Leadership Conference and Representative Assembly and the biennial American Federation of Teachers Convention. Students are chosen by their peers in statewide elections.

Each November, the National Education Association hosts the Connections Conference to help students and staff connect around current education issues.

  • You do NOT need a member ID number, username or password to apply online.
  • Please print and keep a copy of your confirmation email.

Eligibility

You’re eligible for student membership if you’re enrolled in an Education Minnesota affiliated post-secondary school as an undergraduate or graduate. The Education Minnesota affiliated schools are listed on the online application in the dropdown box.

If you’re a member of an Education Minnesota local union, you are not eligible for a student membership – see “How to apply” above.

Dues

Dues for Education Minnesota Aspiring Educators are $25 per year along with any applicable campus chapter dues; the membership year runs from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31. Your membership begins when Education Minnesota receives your application and payment.

If your college campus doesn’t have a campus chapter, we encourage you to start one. Education Minnesota will provide staff time and some financial assistance to new campus chapters.
